Recently Marian Hara hosted an online talk event with the Concerned Citizens of St. John's Parish and the University Network for Human Rights.
We heard from residents of America's Cancer Alley, a region in Louisiana that is the textbook definition of environmental racism. Their new campaign raises awareness of the dangerous levels of chloroprene in the air - radically higher than the 0.2 micrograms per cubic meter allowed by the EPA. This carcinogenic chemical is used by many companies to make the synthetic rubber Neoprene for wetsuits. The infamous DuPont company sold their factory to a Japanese company called Denka.
CAMPAIGN ALERT: Although our target is DENKA, our other target is, as always, Japanese citizens. By listening to and sharing the heart-breaking stories of Robert Taylor, by looking at the science, we can urge others to force DENKA to change. Can they find a new way to manufacture chloroprene? Can wetsuit manufacturers be made to change to natural rubber (like Patagonia)?
Here's a link to the Google Doc that has a letter to DENKA and links to more information. It is open for editing by anyone, so please share it.
